Re: Not-so-well-known anime.
Yotsuba& is a not-so-well known anime. Well that is, manga.
It comes from the Azuma, the creator of Azumanga Daioh (which is popular)
Yotsuba& is equally funny to Azumanga Daioh, I guess it's because it's not an anime yet.

Re: Not-so-well-known anime.
Here's some things I like to call "hidden gems", as they appear to be neglected or rarely discussed titles (Though that's not the case with all of them)
Everything by Studio 4°C.
...
lol.. alright maybe I'll do a bit more than that.
I'll start with some TV series/multiple ep OVAs, then go into singular OVAs and movies.
Earth Maiden Arjuna - An amazing ecological series. Definitely worth watching. Here is an AMV that honestly does the series justice.
Colorful - A fantastic (ecchi) comedy that is so different than most of the comedies we see these days. I thoroughly enjoyed this, despite the poor-looking animation.
Eve no Jikan - Just because I can not advertise this series enough. I seriously think this is the best series to be produced in the past few years, and as long as there is an anime fan who hasn't watched it, then I will promote it. It's a slice-of-life sci-fi, with a casual look at robots, and how they *could* relate to humans.
Windy Tales - Production I.G. on superflat *HHHHHNNNNNGGGGG*. It's a pretty normal school life series, with a focus on wind, and people who can manipulate it (it's not that exaggerated or over the top, don't worry). But I'd say the main reason I watched and enjoyed this was because of the animation style.
Candy Boy - This one does have yuri, but it's nothing too graphic, so don't let that scare you away. It's a visually stunning, and very beautiful short series.
I guess that's it for TV shows. now I'll name some OVAs/movies
Kappa no Coo to Natsuyasumi - A really engaging and entertaining family friendly movie about a modern day boy who finds a Kappa.
Ani*Kuri15 - 15x1min shorts by 15 directors. It's definitely got some bad or uninteresting shorts, but for every bad there is an awesome, so definitely check this out.
Eternal Family - This is about a sort of.. reality show/hidden camera sort of family/situation? It's a very fascinating watch, and I believe it's only about 30 minutes?
Toshizo Hijikata - Based on the historical accounts of Toshizo Hijikata, this is (again I believe 30 minutes) a short focusing on the Shinsengumi, and historical battles in Japan.
Life no Color - Wonderful, 4 minutes. Here it is, watch it.
Barefoot Gen - I dunno really how popular this is, but I found this powerful enough that I'll still post it. If you thought Grave of the Fireflies was good, then you should really watch this.
Nasu: a Summer in Andalusia and Nasu: a Migratory Bird with Suitcase - These two OVAs follow a competitive professional biker, and are both very entertaining.
Noiseman Sound Insect - Honestly, every single anime fan needs to view this. It's 15 mins, and it'll blow your mind. I'm not really sure what to say about it, but definitely check it out.
Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou - A 2 part OVA about a robot who runs a cafe in the middle of no where, in a vanishing world. It's very soothing, and really just a nice simple watch.
