What are the relations to these two? They kinda look the same and act the same so I figured before they're brothers but my friend in High School said they're only friends. Anyone wanna clear that out for me? I'm just too lazy to research it.

ok thats no problem in fact its been a question on many peoples minds so let me clear it up there ~~
well basically none of them are related like L and Near are orphans, and
mello is also one of them two , on top of that i can tell you that Watari is the founder of the orphanage of these gifted childern and watari`s rename just to throw it out there is Quillsh Wammy

Yup. Mello, Near, and L aren't related, just know eachother from the orphanage. Matt, BB (Beyond Birthday), and A were also in the orphanage, but BB and A aren't normally shown in the series, except BB was hinted a few times. All in all, none of them are related, they just know eachother from the orphanage

A is only mentioned once in Another Note. He was the original successor to L and one of the first Wammy Kids.

But apparently A supposedly committed her suicide (yeah her, I said him by accident)
I'm not so sure if this is accurate or even true but:
Years passed and we now find that A never had died. Not at all. She is alive. She is now known as "Y". The letter Y standing for the alias of "Yatima" given the nickname of "Y-love" because of her loving like personality. Y-love is known to be the 4th successor of L, right after Matt who is ranked number 3 before Mello known as "2nd best" compared to Near who always comes 1st. Y stays behind on purpose. Matt the best friend of Mello, stays behind because he finds the whole "competition" ideal to be pointless. And to think if he had a thing for it all he would be competing against his best friend, and once done so, he would no longer have considered Mello to be a friend. Matt supports Mello with all his heart and believes he'll surpass Near one of these days. As selfish as that sounds, that's not the reason Y stays behind. Y too had found out the reason to the ranking after seeing those children of Wammy's competing. Apparently A was great friends with B.

It's confusing because they say A's a guy, but another part A's a girl >_<
I can understand the fake suicide though.
In general, A has nothing to do with (nothing important) Death Note, except he/she is the resason why became a serial killre
